Weekend Catch-Up

Before diving into the finale of The Hero of Ages, we spend a few minutes catching up on our Fourth of July plans, recent reads, and the books currently keeping us busy.

Stef: Hey, book friends! How are you all doing? How was your weekend?

Well...for us it's actually Thursday while we're recording this episode, and I'm especially excited because I have a three-day weekend ahead of me. We even got out early this afternoon, so my Fourth of July weekend has officially started.

The best part is that Jen is coming to visit! We haven't seen each other in months, so we're planning to spend the weekend hanging out by the pool, grabbing brunch, doing a little book shopping, and just catching up.

Jen: I seriously can't wait. We haven't seen each other since November! I got to see Ethan back in March, but it's been way too long since I've seen Stef. The last time we were together was at the book festival.

Stef: I know! It's crazy how quickly time goes by.

Ethan: It really is. You're both overdue for a weekend together.

Jen: Exactly! I'm so excited.

Ethan: That sounds like an amazing weekend.

For me, we're heading out to a family reunion. Tomorrow is actually my dad's birthday, so we're driving to Abilene to celebrate with him before meeting up with the rest of the family on Saturday. We'll finally get to see my mom's side of the family.

Jen: The loud side of the family!

Ethan: The loud side...and definitely the large side.

Jen: Happy birthday to your dad! That sounds like a really fun weekend.

Ethan: Thanks! He's honestly the jolliest Mexican man you'll ever meet.

Jen: He really is. I absolutely love your dad.

Ethan: Everybody loves Mark.

What We've Been Reading

Before jumping into Sanderson's finale, we also catch up on what we've been reading outside of Mistborn.

Jen: I've actually been off work all week, so I've been using the time to catch up with family, take care of appointments, and knock out all those errands you never have time for during the school year. I'm also spending time with my brother here in Fort Worth before heading to Dallas to spend the weekend with Stef.

The other big accomplishment is that I finally finished Book Six of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

That means I'm only two books away from being completely caught up.

These books are huge. I honestly feel like I'm reading Zodiac Academy all over again.

Stef: Every time you send us your monthly reading wrap-up, those books look enormous!

Ethan: They're absolute doorstoppers. My monthly TBR has basically become, "Well...I guess Dungeon Crawler Carl is carrying over into next month." Again.

Jen: Thankfully, I bought all of the audiobooks during one of Audible's big sales. I listen while I'm driving or visiting family, then switch to the physical books whenever I'm home.

Honestly, that's the only reason I've been able to make it through these giant books so quickly.

And I have to say—the audiobooks are phenomenal. I highly recommend experiencing the series that way.

I cannot wait to see what happens in the final two books.

Today we're discussing the ending of The Hero of Ages, which means we're talking about the conclusion of the entire Mistborn Era One trilogy.

Story Recap

To kick off the discussion, Stef recaps the major events from the final chapters of The Hero of Ages.

Stef: As the world collapses beneath ash, earthquakes, and endless koloss armies, Sazed uncovers the truth hidden within the Terris religion and the First Contract of the kandra.

He discovers that the legendary atium cache is actually Ruin's physical body, hidden away by the Lord Ruler and protected by the kandra for centuries to keep Ruin from reclaiming his full power.

Meanwhile, Elend finally solves one of the trilogy's biggest mysteries.

The strange sickness caused by the mists wasn't killing people at all—it was Snapping them into new Allomancers.

As thousands of koloss converge on the Terris refuge, Elend realizes that those who were sick the longest have all become atium Mistings. He leads them into one final battle, burning away Ruin's hidden power before it can ever be reclaimed.

At the same time, Vin faces Ruin directly.

After Marsh tears out her Hemalurgic earring—the spike Ruin has unknowingly used to influence her throughout her life—Vin is finally able to draw upon the mists and fully take up Preservation's power.

She ascends to godhood and confronts Ruin himself, ultimately sacrificing her own life to destroy him.

Although Vin defeats Ruin, the world is still dying.

In the end, Sazed realizes that every religion he spent years preserving contained a piece of the truth. Taking up both Preservation and Ruin, he uses the knowledge stored within his copperminds to restore the world, fulfilling the prophecy as the true Hero of Ages.

The trilogy closes with a bittersweet farewell to Vin and Elend, whose sacrifices save humanity, while Spook, Breeze, Ham, Demoux, and the remaining survivors begin rebuilding a restored world.

First Reactions

With the recap complete, we share our immediate reactions after finishing one of Brandon Sanderson's most acclaimed endings.

Stef: ...and that's the end.

Jen: I wasn't ready.

Seriously...I don't think I was emotionally prepared for any of this.

When I finished the book, I just sat there feeling...empty.

It was such an epic ending that I immediately wanted to text both of you and start talking about it, but I also wanted to save all of my reactions for this episode.

There were so many reveals, so many emotional moments, and honestly, Ethan, you absolutely nailed a lot of your theories.

Stef: You really did. It was kind of unbelievable how many things you predicted.

Jen: Did Nick secretly help you?

Ethan: No! Not at all.

I think what Brandon Sanderson does so well is that the clues are there if you're paying attention. I could see certain possibilities coming together while I was reading, but nothing ever felt predictable.

Every reveal still felt earned.

Once I reached these final chapters, I could barely put the book down. I think I stopped after the first couple of chapters, but after that I finished the rest in one sitting.

I absolutely loved this ending.

Jen: Same here.

Stef: I still laugh because the very first text Jen sent me after finishing was simply:

"I feel empty."

Jen: Because that's exactly how I felt.

We spent three books following these characters, asking questions, making theories, and slowly uncovering every mystery. By the end, every major question had finally been answered.

It wasn't necessarily the ending I expected...

...but it felt like the ending the story needed.

Three Things That Stood Out

As always, we kick off our discussion with our signature 3–2–1 format. We each share three moments that stood out to us from these final chapters before moving into our favorite character moments and final ratings.

Elend and Yomen: A Mirror of What Could Have Been

Ethan: I feel like a lot of what we're going to talk about today is going to overlap, so forgive us if we end up covering some of the same ground. Since I'm going first, I'll try to introduce the topics and then we can dive deeper together.

The first thing I wanted to talk about was Elend and Yomen.

There's a moment where they're walking through Fadrex together, and I thought it was such a great comparison between the two characters. Had Elend's life not changed the way it did throughout this trilogy, I honestly think Yomen is who he could have become.

It felt like Brandon Sanderson was holding up a mirror and showing us an alternate version of Elend.

Later, when Elend starts giving Yomen advice about leadership, I just found myself thinking, "My gosh, Elend...look at you."

He's come so far.

Jen: I know. I love him.

Stef: He's evolved so much.

The Final Battle

Ethan: The second thing that really stood out to me was just the finality of everything.

Going into these chapters, we know this is the end of the trilogy, and the whole battle reminded me a lot of the Battle of Hogwarts.

Stef: Yeah. It really felt like the final stand.

Jen: Exactly.

Ethan: You know characters we've spent three books loving are about to die. Every time Sanderson changes perspectives, you're almost nervous to turn the page because you don't know who's going to make it.

It was gut-wrenching.

Jen, you said you felt empty after finishing the book, and honestly I think that's the perfect way to describe it.

For me, I'd add one more word.

It felt...complete.

Everything came together.

Every character had a purpose.

No matter where they were in the world, everyone had a role to play, and watching all of those storylines converge into one final battle was incredible.

What did you both think?

Vin and Elend's Final Battles

Jen: That's actually one of my points too, so I'll just jump right in.

I wanted to talk about Vin and Elend's individual battles because I honestly don't know another word besides epic to describe them.

Let's start with Vin.

She fought thirteen Inquisitors by herself.

Thirteen.

Holy...my gosh.

Then comes everything Marsh puts her through.

After Vin spends all that time absolutely destroying Inquisitors, Marsh captures her and tortures her.

That was brutal to read.

Every bone he broke...I felt it.

My stomach was in knots reading those chapters because I could feel what Vin was going through.

Then she fights Ruin.

She literally becomes a god and still has to sacrifice everything in the end.

That entire sequence was unbelievable.

Then you have Elend.

Watching him ride into battle with the atium Mistings was just as incredible.

When he realizes that burning every bead of atium is the only way to keep Ruin from reclaiming his body, I thought that was absolutely genius.

He knew they weren't going to survive.

But he also knew they could still make a difference.

To me, that's what made him such an incredible leader.

Stef: I think what stood out to me most was Elend's speech before the battle.

He doesn't lie to anyone.

He tells them exactly what's about to happen.

There are tens of thousands of koloss out there.

They're going to die.

But every second they hold the enemy back matters.

Every moment they delay Ruin's victory is a victory for everyone else.

Then those newly Snapped atium Mistings willingly march into battle anyway.

That alone gave me chills.

As the battle goes on, they just keep returning for more atium.

They never stop.

By the end, Sanderson describes mountains of koloss bodies.

It was such an incredible scene.

Ethan: That's exactly what I loved too.

When Elend first gives that speech, I kept wondering if Sanderson was setting us up for some miracle.

Maybe there would be a way out.

Maybe someone would save them.

Instead...

No.

The plan really is for them to die.

And that's what makes it so powerful.

They're sacrificing themselves so Ruin can never reclaim his body.

When that realization finally clicked for me, I just thought, "That's fierce."

Jen: Exactly.

Elend knew there wasn't a way to win.

His goal wasn't surviving.

His goal was making sure Ruin lost.

That was such a brilliant decision on his part because if Ruin had reclaimed the atium, everyone else would have been done for.

Could Vin and Elend Return?

Ethan: My third point is more of a question than an observation.

At the end of the book, Sazed writes to Spook that Vin and Elend "deserve a rest."

That wording immediately caught my attention because it almost sounds like he could bring them back if he wanted to.

Since I know absolutely nothing about Era Two...

...do you think there's any chance we see Vin and Elend again?

Jen: I don't know.

I remembered Sazed saying that he tried to restore their bodies but couldn't bring back their souls.

That made me think maybe their story really is finished.

---

Stef: He also says he'll probably understand his new powers better over time.

So...maybe the door isn't completely closed.

At the same time, he tells Spook that Vin and Elend are happy where they are now.

Honestly, after everything they went through, I don't know if they'd even want to come back.

Jen: That's true.

But honestly...

After this trilogy, I wouldn't put anything past Brandon Sanderson.

At this point I feel like he's capable of anything.

Vin and Elend's Sacrifice

The conversation naturally shifts from the final battle itself to its emotional aftermath. We talk about Vin and Elend's deaths, why they felt necessary for the story, and why the ending left such a lasting impact.

Saying Goodbye to Vin and Elend

Jen: That actually leads perfectly into my second point.

As much as this absolutely crushed me—and trust me, it crushed me—I really want to talk about Vin and Elend's deaths.

When I got to the moment where Elend's head was cut off...

I had to stop reading.

I literally put the book down for a minute because Elend is my guy.

It's like killing Dorian.

I just couldn't handle it.

But at the same time, I knew this story had been building toward something like this.

This trilogy has always been dark.

We lost Kelsier in the very first book, so Brandon Sanderson already showed us that no one was safe.

Part of me expected we'd lose someone important before the end.

I just wasn't prepared for it to be both of them.

Looking back, though...

...it feels right.

Vin and Elend spent this entire trilogy sacrificing for other people.

In the end, they gave absolutely everything so everyone else could have a future.

Jen: One of my favorite moments comes from Sazed's letter to Spook.

He writes:

"I tried to bring them back, but apparently fixing their bodies doesn't return their souls. I will get better at this with time, I expect. However, be assured that I have spoken with our friends, and they are quite happy where they are. They deserve a rest, I think."

Honestly...

That brought me a lot of peace.

When was the last time Vin or Elend actually rested?

Vin had been constantly burning pewter ever since The Well of Ascension.

They'd both been pushing themselves beyond human limits for so long.

Maybe rest really was what they deserved.

Stef: That's such a good point.

Vin had been burning pewter almost nonstop.

Neither of them had really stopped fighting since the beginning of this trilogy.

---

Jen: Exactly.

As much as I wanted a different ending for them, I also loved what Sazed did afterward.

He restored their bodies.

He put Elend back together.

He laid them to rest among the flowers.

That whole scene was beautiful.

Then Spook finds them lying together...

At that point it just hit me.

It had to be both of them.

I don't think one of them could have kept going without the other.

When Vin tells Ruin that Elend was the only thing tying her to this world...

I believed her.

Once Elend died, she had nothing left except stopping Ruin.

Jen: Reading that actually reminded me of Blood Over Bright Haven.

Remember how we all wished Sayana and Tomo could have had more time together?

This felt similar.

I wanted Vin and Elend to grow old together.

I wanted them to have a future.

But the story wasn't about giving them a peaceful ending.

It was about what they were willing to sacrifice for everyone else.

Stef: I think what helped me was knowing they were together.

Sazed tells us he spoke with them.

They're happy.

They're finally at peace.

That made the ending bittersweet instead of hopeless.

Ethan: Yeah.

The moment Elend died...

I knew Ruin had made a terrible mistake.

Vin even says it herself.

She isn't Preservation.

She's not going to simply preserve what's left.

Ruin had just destroyed the only thing keeping her tied to the world.

At that point she had nothing left to lose.

All that remained was stopping him.

Spook's New Beginning

Although the ending is filled with heartbreaking losses, Brandon Sanderson also leaves readers with hope. One of the biggest surprises is where Spook's journey ultimately leads.

Jen: My third thing that stood out was everything that happened with Spook.

I never would've guessed this would be his ending.

In the same letter, Sazed tells him:

"You did well. Know that the message you sent via Captain Goradel saved us all in the end. The people will need leadership in the years to come. Likely they will look to you.

I have made you Mistborn and healed the damage you did to your body. I hope you don't mind. It was actually Kelsier's request. Consider it a parting gift from him."

I loved that.

Spook started this series as someone who always felt overlooked.

He wanted to matter.

He wanted Kelsier's approval.

He wanted to fall in love.

He wanted to become Mistborn.

By the end...

He gets all of it.

I honestly never saw that coming.

Ethan: I loved it too.

It actually reminded me of The Magician's Nephew from The Chronicles of Narnia.

Sazed has essentially created a brand-new world.

Nobody alive remembers what the old world looked like.

They're seeing green grass.

Blue skies.

Flowers.

Everything is new.

And now Spook gets to help shape what that new world becomes.

More than anything else, that's what makes me excited to read Era Two.

I want to see the world Spook helps build.

Jen: And he gets to be with Beldre.

That made me so happy.

Spook deserved happiness.

He deserved someone to love.

---

Ethan: He really did.

And I love that Kelsier was still looking out for him.

---

Jen: Exactly!

Everything Spook ever wanted finally came true.

He became Mistborn.

He earned Kelsier's respect.

He found someone to love.

He became important.

I never would've predicted that's where his story was headed.

Stef: I think my favorite part was learning that Kelsier had asked Sazed to give Spook that gift.

Throughout the series, Spook always believed he wasn't one of Kelsier's chosen people.

He thought he was only part of the crew because Clubs happened to be his uncle.

So finding out that Kelsier had been thinking about him all along...

That was such a beautiful moment.

Ethan: Honestly...

Spook is probably the reason my heart wasn't completely broken by the end of this book.

---

Jen: Same.

And even though Vin and Elend are gone...

Knowing they're together—and knowing Spook finally gets the life he always wanted—gave me enough hope to walk away smiling through the tears.

The Kandra's Choice

The conversation shifts to one of the trilogy's biggest revelations: the role of the kandra in hiding Ruin's power. We discuss KanPaar's motivations, free will, and what this means for the future of the kandra.

Was KanPaar Already Under Ruin's Influence?

Stef: The first thing that really stood out to me was KanPaar.

I kept wondering if Ruin had already gotten to him before the final confrontation with the kandra.

When KanPaar locks up the First Generation and tries to seize control, it reminded me so much of the way Quellion and Spook behaved whenever Ruin was influencing them through their spikes.

It made me wonder if Ruin had been manipulating KanPaar much earlier than we realized.

What do you two think?

Jen: I actually took it a little differently.

I think KanPaar was just power-hungry.

We saw hints of that from the very beginning whenever he was so condescending toward TenSoon.

To me, it felt like he wanted control regardless of Ruin.

The only reason I lean that way is because Ruin didn't even know where the kandra homeland was for most of the story.

Once he finally found it, of course he tried to take advantage of it.

But before that...

I think KanPaar was making those choices on his own.

Stef: That's a good point.

Ruin couldn't really manipulate something he didn't know existed.

---

Ethan: I almost think Brandon Sanderson leaves it intentionally ambiguous.

If Jen's right, then it raises an interesting question about humanity—or really, about sentient beings in general.

The kandra have free will.

Some choose to remain faithful to the First Contract.

Others, like KanPaar, choose themselves.

It becomes this larger question about what people naturally do when they're given freedom.

Some serve others.

Some pursue power.

I think Sanderson wanted us to wrestle with that idea.

Stef: You're probably right.

Once the kandra receive their Blessings, they gain individuality.

They're no longer just mistwraiths.

So it makes sense that they'd have different personalities and different motivations.

---

Jen: I also loved Sazed's reaction.

He basically says, "I guess this happens in every society."

Even among the kandra, there are people who seek power for themselves.

---

What Happens to the Kandra?

Ethan: Something else I kept wondering about...

Do you think we'll see more kandra in Era Two?

They only exist because of Hemalurgy, and now Sazed holds both Preservation and Ruin.

So...what happens to them now?

---

Stef: I honestly don't know.

The book never really tells us.

After everyone removes their Blessings and becomes mistwraiths again, we don't spend much time with them.

---

Jen: That's exactly what I was thinking.

Once everything starts happening with Vin and Elend, we never really go back to the kandra.

I actually expected something different.

When Vin took in the mists and became Preservation, I thought the mistwraiths were somehow going to join her or strengthen her because of their connection to the mists.

---

Stef: I wondered that too.

Instead they almost disappear from the story after that moment.

---

Ethan: Which makes it even heavier.

Their sacrifice doesn't make Vin stronger.

It simply prevents Ruin from controlling them anymore.

When TenSoon removes his spikes...

That really hit me.

We'd spent three books getting to know him, and suddenly he's a mistwraith again.

That was heartbreaking.

Preservation, Ruin, and the Creation of Humanity

From there, our discussion naturally turns toward some of the biggest cosmere mysteries revealed during the finale. Even after finishing the trilogy, Brandon Sanderson leaves us with plenty of questions.

"That Which We'd Seen Before"

Stef: My second point is really more of a question.

When Vin and Ruin are fighting, Ruin talks about why Preservation wanted to create humanity.

He says Preservation wanted to create something that could choose to preserve at some times and ruin at others.

Then he says he wanted to create something "in the form of that which we'd seen before."

That line completely caught my attention.

What does he mean by "that which we'd seen before?"

Were there humans before these humans?

That's where my mind immediately went.

Jen: I wondered if he simply meant humans before all the different creations we know now.

Before koloss.

Before Steel Inquisitors.

Before everything the Lord Ruler created.

Just...ordinary people.

Stef: Maybe.

But I kept reading it as though there had been something even earlier than that.

Something before Preservation created humanity as we know it.

---

Ethan: My first thought honestly went to the Cosmere.

It felt like Brandon Sanderson was hinting at a much larger history we haven't seen yet.

Like he's quietly opening a much bigger door.

---

Jen: Which makes me think we probably need to read Mistborn: Secret History.

We've had quite a few listeners mention that it explains more about Preservation and Ruin and what they were before all of this.

Stef: I think that's probably our next stop.

Because now I have even more questions than I did before.

---

Why Were Preservation and Ruin Ever Separated?

Stef: That actually leads perfectly into my third point.

When Vin defeats Ruin, both Preservation and Ruin appear as actual people.

Then, later, when Sazed takes up both powers, he realizes something.

He thinks:

"Preservation and Ruin belonged together."

That completely blew my mind.

If they belong together...

How were they separated in the first place?

Who were those two people?

How did they each take one power?

I have so many questions now.

Jen: I think that's where all of our conversations about balance finally came together.

Throughout the trilogy we kept talking about balance.

We were wrong about what that meant.

The balance wasn't between good and evil.

It was between Preservation and Ruin existing together.

Stef: Exactly.

The powers weren't meant to exist separately.

They were always supposed to work together.

---

Jen: Which means...

I guess we need to keep reading.

---

Ethan: I'm completely on board with that.

I have a feeling Secret History is going to answer a lot of these questions.

Transition

With our "Three Things That Stood Out" complete, we move into the next part of our discussion: two character moments that left the biggest impression on us.

Character Moments

After discussing the biggest reveals from the finale, we shift our attention to the individual character moments that stayed with us long after we finished the book.

---

Vin's True Purpose

Ethan: Last episode, I said I still felt like there was something about Vin that hadn't been revealed yet.

Well...

Here it is.

The moment she takes in the mists and becomes Preservation's successor, everything suddenly clicks into place.

My immediate thought was:

"She's not the Hero of Ages."

That realization reminded me of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, specifically the conversation between Dumbledore and Snape where Snape accuses Dumbledore of raising Harry "like a pig for slaughter."

That's honestly how Vin's story felt to me.

It wasn't that she was chosen because she was special.

It was that every circumstance in her life had been guiding her toward this one moment.

When you realize that...

It's incredibly heavy.

She never really stood a chance.

This was always going to be her destiny.

Stef: Yeah.

That really was her destiny.

---

Jen: It was.

But I also think that's why she and Elend get to be together in the end.

Had she remained Preservation forever, I don't think she ever would've been able to truly be with him again.

The only reason they're together now is because she was willing to sacrifice even that power.

Stef: And without that sacrifice, Sazed never could've taken both powers and restored the world.

Everything had to happen exactly the way it did.

---

Jen: Exactly.

And then finding out why Vin had been chosen...

That completely blew my mind.

The only reason she carried that Hemalurgic spike was because her sister was a Seeker and her mother murdered her.

One horrifying moment determined the course of Vin's entire life.

Stef: I've always wondered if her mother was actually being influenced by Ruin.

She was hearing voices.

Maybe she wasn't simply insane.

Maybe Ruin had already found a way to manipulate her.

---

Ethan: I wondered that too.

If that's true, then it means both Preservation and Ruin had been moving pieces around Vin's entire life.

Everything was leading to this moment.

Again...

She never really had a choice.

---

Stef: We talked about this last episode too.

If Vin had chosen Zane instead of Elend, she would've become Ruin's tool instead.

That possibility was there all along.

---

Jen: Which just makes me even happier she found Elend when she did.

At least she got some happiness before everything ended.

---

Sazed's Journey Comes Full Circle

One of the trilogy's most satisfying payoffs is Sazed's character arc. His years of studying religions finally reveal their true purpose.

Ethan: My second character moment has to be Sazed.

I have to admit...

Throughout the entire book, I kept thinking the epigraphs sounded like Sazed.

The only thing that convinced me otherwise was that he never said, "I think."

That little phrase became so tied to his voice that I talked myself out of believing it.

Then I realized...

He doesn't need to say it anymore.

Now he knows.

It really was Sazed all along.

Kudos to Brandon Sanderson.

He kept me guessing until the very end.

Ethan: But what I loved most wasn't simply that Sazed became the Hero of Ages.

It was how he became the Hero of Ages.

For three books we've watched him search through religion after religion, wondering if any of them contained the truth.

It turns out...

Every single one did.

Each religion preserved one small piece of what he needed.

Then, when he finally takes up Preservation and Ruin, he uses everything he'd spent his life collecting to restore the world.

I thought that was absolutely incredible.

Jen: Remember when I texted you after somebody spoiled who the Hero of Ages was in the YouTube comments?

I was so upset.

I didn't even know if it was true, but I couldn't stop thinking about it after that.

Even though it was spoiled for me...

Reading that reveal was still amazing.

Watching Sazed use every religion he'd preserved to rebuild the world...

It made me realize that's what his entire journey had been leading toward.

Every religion mattered.

Every piece of knowledge mattered.

Nothing had been wasted.

Stef: That's exactly why I love Sazed so much.

He's humble all the way through the story.

Even in those final moments, he keeps thinking:

"It can't be me."

He never sees himself as the hero.

Then he slowly realizes the prophecies have been pointing toward him all along.

And when I finished the book, I immediately thought back to the opening epigraph:

"I am, unfortunately, the Hero of Ages."

That is such a Sazed sentence.

I remember thinking...

"How did I not know?"

Nobody else would've written it that way.

Then Elend.

Then Vin again.

Sazed never even crossed my mind.

And I think that's what makes the reveal so satisfying.

It doesn't feel like Sanderson tricked us.

Ethan: We made it, y'all.

What a journey.

This is an easy five stars for me.

If I had one small critique of the series, it's that Brandon Sanderson can be a little wordy at times. I think that's probably a common criticism of his writing in general.

That said...

I can't deny how beautifully crafted this story is.

The world-building is incredible.

The characters are compelling and complex.

The action is some of the best I've ever read.

Even during the darker sections—when the story almost feels emotionally exhausting—I kept turning the pages because I needed to know what happened next.

And then we get to this ending.

What a perfect way to close the trilogy.

As someone who loves fantasy, there's nothing more satisfying than reaching the end of a series and feeling like every major question has been answered.

I walked away feeling completely satisfied.

I can't recommend this trilogy enough.

Five stars.

Every book in this trilogy has been five stars.

I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about this series.

Every plot twist.

Every reveal.

Every character arc.

Everything came together in such an incredible way.

It was dark.

It was heartbreaking.

It was beautifully written.

I honestly don't know how to move on from this world.

I would catch myself lying awake at night thinking about the end of the world while I was reading this book.

That's how deeply it pulled me in.

This trilogy is going to stay with me for a very long time.

Stef: I actually went back and looked at the review I originally wrote on Goodreads after finishing this book for the first time.

It simply said:

"Six stars. I will never be the same after this trilogy."

Honestly...

That still sums it up perfectly.

Even reading it again, I was blown away by how well everything comes together.

Knowing the ending didn't take anything away from the experience.

If anything, it made me appreciate Brandon Sanderson's foreshadowing even more.

Reading it this time alongside both of you made it even better.

Watching your theories develop—and seeing which ones turned out to be right—was so much fun.

This remains one of my favorite fantasy series of all time.

And somehow...

I still finished it with more questions than answers.

I need to know more about Preservation and Ruin.

I need to understand how those powers were originally separated.

And now I really want to keep exploring the Cosmere.
